May 10, 2024

Boston, MA – May 10, 2024 – HarbourVest Partners, a global private markets asset manager, today announced the firm has appointed John Toomey as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) effective October 1, 2024. John Toomey and Pete Wilson have been part of the firm’s Executive Management Committee (EMC), which collectively serves as CEO, for more than a decade. As part of this transition, Pete Wilson, will remain at the firm through the end of 2025, when he plans to retire.

“HarbourVest is a special place that I have been honored to be a part of for more than 27 years,” said John Toomey, CEO, HarbourVest.  “As part of our leadership team alongside Pete Wilson, we’ve seen the company grow from $36B AUM to $125B AUM and increase in size from nearly 200 to over 1200, always with a keen eye toward our client-centric approach and company culture. I consider myself lucky to have worked alongside Pete first as senior members of the secondary team, and later as part of the EMC. He has been an incredible partner and I am grateful for his knowledge and friendship. I am excited about the opportunities in front of HarbourVest and look forward to continuing to build on the foundations thoughtfully laid by our founders in 1982.”

“The last 11 years working together with John on HarbourVest’s EMC, part of a 28-year career at the firm, have truly been the most rewarding of my career,” said Pete Wilson, Managing Director, HarbourVest. “As part of the EMC, John and I have accomplished so much together, and what I am most proud of us is the trust we’ve built with our clients, general partners, employees, and our communities throughout that time. Perhaps the greatest achievement I will look back on is the growth we’ve experienced over the last decade, and the remarkable people who have joined our firm. We navigated through market ups and downs and a pandemic, while strengthening the quality of our organization.  It is that team – and our unique culture – that will drive HarbourVest’s success in the future, and I look forward to watching and supporting John’s stewardship of the company as he continues this important work.”

HarbourVest has been headquartered in Boston, MA for more than 40 years. The firm employs over 1200 employees globally across 13 offices. In mid-2025, the firm will move into its new headquarters at One Lincoln Street in Boston.

Continuation solutions encompass a host of transaction types in which a GP secures interim liquidity and/or additional primary capital for their LPs in a strongly performing asset, or set of assets, that the GP will continue to own and control. Specifically, they include continuation funds, new funds created by GPs for the purpose of acquiring the asset(s) that continue to be managed by the same GP and capitalized by one or several secondary buyers, or equity recapitalizations involving a direct equity or structured equity investment into a portfolio company. These transactions can also include a parallel investment from the GP’s latest fund into that same pool of assets (a “cross-fund trade”).
