Four decades of helping investors navigate global private markets to meet their investment objectives

BOSTON, May 16, 2022 – HarbourVest Partners, the global private markets investment specialist, announced today its 40th anniversary. Founded in 1982 by Brooks Zug and Ed Kane, HarbourVest has a long track record of success. Across its private markets platform, HarbourVest has committed more than $49 billion to newly-formed funds, completed over $40 billion in secondary purchases, and invested over $27 billion directly in operating companies across many sectors and through multiple economic cycles.[1] HarbourVest has supported more than 30,000 portfolio companies and held more than 900 advisory seats. Today, HarbourVest is a trusted partner to its clients and general partners around the world with more than $92 billion in AUM.

“Today, we are pleased to celebrate HarbourVest’s 40th anniversary,” said John Toomey, Managing Director, HarbourVest Partners. “We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us in our journey from a small, Boston-based startup in 1982 to a global firm with 12 offices and nearly 900 employees across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Our success was built on our strong partnerships with our clients, general partners, and employees.”

HarbourVest launched one of the first private equity funds in 1982, with Fund I raising $200 million from 19 institutional clients during a challenging economic period. Beginning with two employees in its first year, the firm expanded internationally, making its first partnership investments in Europe and Asia in 1984, and in Latin America in 1994, before establishing a local presence in key global markets.

“This is an exciting moment in our long history and marks the start of our next chapter,” said Pete Wilson, Managing Director, HarbourVest Partners. “Over the past four decades, we have brought together an incredibly talented and broad team who have been integral in shaping and growing our business to the place where it is today – a leader in private markets investments with a global footprint and wide set of capabilities.”

HarbourVest has also continued to be a pioneer in developing new strategies and solutions for its investors, growing its product offering significantly since its inception. The firm made its first direct investment in 1983 and its first secondary investment in 1986. It has since expanded its capabilities to include private credit, infrastructure and real assets, and serving private clients with unique investment vehicles.

Continuation solutions encompass a host of transaction types in which a GP secures interim liquidity and/or additional primary capital for their LPs in a strongly performing asset, or set of assets, that the GP will continue to own and control. Specifically, they include continuation funds, new funds created by GPs for the purpose of acquiring the asset(s) that continue to be managed by the same GP and capitalized by one or several secondary buyers, or equity recapitalizations involving a direct equity or structured equity investment into a portfolio company. These transactions can also include a parallel investment from the GP’s latest fund into that same pool of assets (a “cross-fund trade”).
