About Edward

Ed Kane, a founder of the Firm, was a senior managing director through early 2010. In May 2010, he became a Senior Advisor. He also serves as an advisory committee member for funds managed by Charterhouse Capital Partners and has also served on the boards of three public companies (Xylogics, AI Corporation, and Mutual Risk Management Ltd.). He joined John Hancock’s corporate finance department in 1979 and co-founded Hancock Venture Partners in 1982, which later became HarbourVest Partners. Ed is a Trustee of the Redwood Library and was a Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania.

Ed was previously a Major in United States Army Intelligence where he trained in electronics and telecommunications and graduated from the United States Army Command and General Staff College.

He received a BA (cum laude) from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1975.

Continuation solutions encompass a host of transaction types in which a GP secures interim liquidity and/or additional primary capital for their LPs in a strongly performing asset, or set of assets, that the GP will continue to own and control. Specifically, they include continuation funds, new funds created by GPs for the purpose of acquiring the asset(s) that continue to be managed by the same GP and capitalized by one or several secondary buyers, or equity recapitalizations involving a direct equity or structured equity investment into a portfolio company. These transactions can also include a parallel investment from the GP’s latest fund into that same pool of assets (a “cross-fund trade”).
